Omoyele Sowore has called out singer Adekunle Gold over what he described as hypocrisy regarding freedom of expression. According to Sowore, Adekunle Gold openly criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, and such comments were widely defended at the time as free speech. He argued that if the singer had been arrested over those tweets back then, many Nigerians would have protested in defense of his rights.

Sowore questioned why individuals who once benefited from free expression would later support or rely on the police, courts, and cybercrime laws against ordinary Nigerians over online banter and social media exchanges.

He stressed that freedom of expression should apply equally to everyone — celebrities, politicians, activists, and young Nigerians online — regardless of status or influence.

Sowore also criticized the Nigeria Police Force and the judiciary, accusing them of being used to suppress online speech through harsh legal actions and excessive punishments for matters that should not be treated as criminal offenses.

Reports recall that in 2012, Adekunle Gold allegedly tweeted: “Dear God, if You give us Dagrin back, we’ll give You Jonathan in return.”
