Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, has arrived in Cape Town to participate in the prestigious Spier Dialogue 2026, where African leaders and stakeholders are gathering to discuss the continent’s future and pressing global challenges.

According to Obi, the dialogue comes at a critical moment for Africa as nations across the continent continue to face challenges related to governance, democracy, economic inclusion, migration, urbanisation, and leadership. However, he stressed that Africa also possesses enormous potential driven by the creativity, resilience, and energy of its youthful population.

The former presidential candidate expressed optimism ahead of his scheduled address at the event, noting that his speech will focus on policies that can accelerate growth, development, and sustainable progress across Africa.

Obi emphasized that Africa’s future should not be defined by poverty despite the continent’s vast natural and human resources. He called for a shift from consumption-driven economies to productive economies capable of creating opportunities for citizens and driving long-term prosperity.

He further advocated for politics rooted in competence, compassion, and accountability rather than division and empty promises, insisting that leadership must prioritize practical solutions that improve the daily lives of ordinary people.

During his visit to Cape Town, Obi also met with members of the Nigerian community in South Africa, where he held extensive discussions concerning the challenges faced by African expatriates living in the country. The engagement reportedly lasted over two hours and focused on finding ways to strengthen unity, understanding, and support among Africans abroad.

Reaffirming his vision for national and continental transformation, Peter Obi stated that he remains committed to building a “New Nigeria” and a “New Africa” where governance genuinely serves the people, young people have access to education and opportunities, and leadership is built on integrity, sacrifice, and service.
